Why Are We Offering a FREE Convention?

In an effort to increase interest in the WAO among members and non-members alike we are going to extremes to make this our best convention ever. How extreme? Not only are we making this one of our most informative conventions yet but we are also offering it at no charge to entice new people to participate. WAO has a wonderful core group of regular attendees who are very friendly and willing to share their knowledge with you. However this group is eager to see some fresh faces at this year’s convention. Will you please consider joining us this year? We are offering a great opportunity to learn something new and a chance to meet and socialize with others in the watch and clock trade. Our watch instructor for this convention is none other than Tom Schomaker CMW21. Tom is the staff watch repair instructor for AWCI and teaches all their watch courses at headquarters.

The Not So Small Fine Print

Please know and understand that all of the WAO Board of Directors and many of those who attend regularly have already agreed to pay for their convention spots. These fine folks are willing to do this to help make this free convention available to as many as possible. Naturally, a free convention does create some exceptions but there is no catch! Surely we would like you to participate again and would like for you to become a member but there is NO requirement for you to do so. However, we must have some rules to avoid anyone taking unfair advantage of our generous offer so here they are.

  1. We require one $45 REFUNDABLE deposit to hold your spot open for any or all educational courses at the convention. This is necessary because class sizes are limited and we are expecting a high demand for this convention. We also hope that the deposit will prevent us from holding a spot for someone who does not show up. If you attend the convention or cancel 30 days in advance we will refund this deposit. This “deposit” must be sent in with your application. If the convention happens to be full when we receive your application we will refund your money or if you would like, put you on a list to call in case someone else cancels. These refunds will be made after the convention’s Saturday Banquet
  2. We can only offer the free educational opportunities and the two free meals to one person per household. Any other family member who chooses to attend a course or a meal will be expected to pay the normal fee for that course or meal.
  3. Of course we can not pay for your travel or lodging expense.

Please Act Now!

A free convention such as this is unprecedented and demand will be high so please make plans now. This letter is going out to 450 watch and clockmakers in a six state area. All classes are limited to 12 active participants each. There are 12 monitoring positions available for each class but please understand that monitors can only observe and do not actively participate. You may sign up for one class or all of them but we ask that watchmakers please limit themselves to the watch classes and clockmakers to the clock classes. Depending on how people sign up for the courses there will only be 12-48 slots available. Also remember, only one free set of meals (Friday and Saturday evening) per household (with a limit of 55) will be allowed to keep within our budget. If you want to be assured of your place at the convention, act now so that we can hold a spot for you.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 17, 2009.
