Clock Courses
Friday 7/17 Afternoon and Saturday 7/18 Morning
COMMON PROBLEMS WITH THE MODERN FLOOR CLOCK: This course will contain a slide show presentation combined with some hands on adjustment to modern floor clock movements. Over the last 30 years Michael Gainey has compiled the most common issues found when servicing these movements in the home. Emphasis is not on rebuilding or overhauling but on those issues that are frequently found as the clocks age - prior to their need for rebuilding. Movements from manufacturers such as Hermle, Keininger, Jauch and Urgos will be covered. Class length will be approximately 4 hours. Instructors: Michael Gainey, CC21 and Mark Baker, CMC, CC21 (Friday afternoon)
RESTORATION, CLEANING AND POLISHING CLOCK CASES: During this seminar you will learn how to handle the different finishes found on antique clock cases including shellac, varnish and lacquer. Learn the use of water-soluble dyes for matching colors on newly repaired sections on your antique clock case. These dyes can also help to make a newly constructed project look older. Also covered will be marble, slate cases and Adamantine. The emphasis will be on cleaning and preserving not complete stripping and refinishing. Informative lecture length will be approximately 2 hours. Instructor: David Martin (Saturday morning)
GLASS CUTTING DEMONSTRATION: Many of us have found a need to cut a small glass for a clock case from time to time, sometimes with less than ideal results. Scott and Tonya from Eddie’s Glass and Mirror in Columbus will perform an informal demonstration regarding the proper method and tools for cutting glass. They will discuss what makes a proper glass cutter and the techniques to use the tool properly. Some of these tools will be available for purchase if desired. If time allows, participants will have an opportunity to try their own hand at cutting glass during the demonstration.
